Meet Your Chakras
If you've ever taken a yoga class or listened to a guided meditation, chances are you heard the word chakra a time or two. My first introduction to energy healing/medicine, the larger system under which the chakras are classified, was by an energy pracititioner named Donna Eden. She is also an author, speaker and teaches certification programs at her school of energy medicine.
The basic premise of energy medicine, or energy healing, is that it is the root to both healing and disease. In other words, if there is a disruption to the natural energy that flows through our bodies, it will manifest itself in the body as disease. So, in a nutshell, in order to correct a physical problem, both modern and indigenous healers believe that you first need to correct the energetic imbalance associated with a specific part of the physical body. If you do the research, you'll find this area of healing stems from Africa originally, and was later carried to what was then known as "black India." This later translated into what we know of today as yoga. Imagine all of the other indigenous cultures around the world who had/have their own form of energy healing! As people migrated around the world, so did these systems. With those migrations came revisions and translations to fit the philosophies of various cultures. As a practitioner, I truly believe in energy and realize that it plays a larger role in healing and overall wellness than any physical remedy you can find. With that being said, natural and holistic methods of healing can and do positively affect the energy in the chakras and meridians, thereby helping to induce balance.
Now, onto your chakras...
As pictured in the photo above, the chakras are represented by the colored circles you see; we begin identifying the chakras from the bottom up, with the 1st chakra at the bottom, and so forth. Each of the chakras is identified by it's signature color, which is outlined below.
A chakra is an energy center, or a data bank per se - a place that stores your energy. It also functions as a vortex which "spins" the energy, interacting with various physiological and neurological systems in the body. Our experiences in life, both physical and psychological, are merely energy that becomes housed in our chakras. Because we have experienced negative circumstances or encounters at some point, the energy from these experiences becomes stored as well. This is why understanding how to care for your chakras is vital to your overall health and well-being.
The chakras are not to be confused with the body's meridians, through which energy flows. The meridians - there are thought to be 12 of them, plus 2 additional pathways known as the strange flows - are the pathways through which energy flows in the body. I like to think of the chakras as "houses" and the meridians as the "electricity" that flows throughout. While most traditional content teaches that the body has 7 chakras, each one associated with a different part of the body, it is thought that there are at least 2 additional chakras that exist outside the realm of the body. The chakras help to regulate all of the body's processes, which explains why it is believed that whenever illness is present in the body, there was first a blockage of energy in one or more of the chakras.

Keys to Caring for and Healing the Chakras:
1. Understand the connection between your chakras and your own personal belief system.
The goal here is to be introduced to the concept that everything you think you know (about everything) is associated with your chakras. Exploring and understanding this is very helpful in decoding why you believe the things you do and what you can do about creating an alternative belief or system for yourself. I explore this more in detail in episode 2 of my podcast, SOULSTICE. You can listen to me explain this post and introduce the Keys to Caring for and Healing the Chakras HERE.
2. Begin to Balance Your Chakras
Balancing the chakras is not as difficult as you may think. In episode 2 of SOULSTICE as previously mentioned, we'll explore how to do this, even if you have no prior experience.
3. Protect Your Chakras
Life happens to all of us; but when you have the tools to check yourself and remain as balanced as possible, winning at life becomes a hell of a lot easier. No matter what vitamins, herbs or supplements you take - and no matter how perfect your diet - understanding how to protect your energy and balance it throughout life's experiences will help you feel clearer and more in control.
Now that you've had a crash course on the chakras and better understand what roles they play in your body, the next time you feel like you're having an "off" day or notice a physical symptom, think about your energy and the impact it can have on your overall health. This not only enlightens you but also empowers you to take your health into your own hands!
