3 Tips for Healthier, Prettier Skin

Do you depend on your skin’s appearance for self-confidence?

Years ago, when I was dancing for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, I got a lot of compliments on my skin. But what most people didn’t realize is that I did a really good job covering up imperfections with makeup (a lot of it). I had eczema that came and went as it pleased, and although it rarely affected my face, I still had to think about the other parts of my body that were often exposed, thanks to sometimes super-skimpy costumes.

You can probably imagine that I began to rely heavily on my appearance for my self-confidence. But guess what? You shouldn’t have to! Whether you love playing in makeup or prefer the fresh-faced look, it’s essential that you develop some rituals around skin care, so that you can have healthy, beautiful skin forevah! Let’s jump into my 3 Tips for Healthier, Prettier Skin!

Don’t fool yourself. You knew this part was coming! Yes, yes and yes - your skin’s appearance is dependent upon what you put in your body, as much as what you put on it. A clean, mostly-plant-based diet, coupled with daily care for your liver make up a huge part of your skin’s success.

This doesn’t have to be complicated. Eat less meat. Eat more plants. Plants include whole fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, and some grains. Reduce or eliminate your gluten, sugar and dairy intake, as these foods are inflammatory, acidic in nature and create more work for your precious liver to neutralize and eliminate.

Your liver has more than 500 functions. Talk about the worker bee! In a nutshell, its job is to neutralize toxins and inflammation as well as to eliminate what the body no longer needs. Aside from extremely important tasks like converting your thyroid’s T4 hormone to the active T3, or facilitating the metabolism of estrogen so it doesn’t accumulate in your body, the liver’s health is directly related to the appearance of your skin.

What you can do - Detoxifying the liver is a critical step to promoting optimal health and longevity. If you never intentionally care for your liver, you are destined to encounter chronic conditions at some point in life, simply due to the nature in which the liver functions. If toxins cannot be released, they recirculate through the body (think of a fan circulating air).

Although the spring is usually associated with liver cleansing, I recommend seasonal liver detoxes via a quality herbal formula designed to clean and strengthen the liver and gallbladder. Performing this seasonally makes cleansing easier to remember while helping your body prepare for climate and the attributes that accompany each season. You will love The Liver Cleanse that we have carried since our inception. It’s an amazing formula that works exceptionally well with both adults and children. We typically advise children to receive 1/3 the dose of an adult, but you can always contact us if you’d like.

Top tip: be sure your bowels are moving 2-3 times daily to ensure the toxins are eliminated properly. Going #2 less often? Pick up our bestselling product, The Bowel Cleanse to clean the colon, remove impacted fecal matter and reduce excess weight.

Skincare can make or break your beauty goals. If you’ve ever tried a cheaply made brand AND a higher quality brand, I’m sure you can write a list of the differences you noticed. Companies only looking to improve their bottom will not care about your skin’s appearance or health over the long run. Some of the harshest, most toxic ingredients are often the cheapest to purchase, so beware of companies that use ingredients known to be potentially cancer-causing or dangerous to humans. If you don’t know what these are, simply do a little research and you’ll see just how prevalent toxic ingredients are - likely even in some of your favorite products. Yes, companies are allowed to use lots of different chemicals in their formulations. In the US, there are roughly only a dozen chemicals that are not allowed for use. In Europe, nearly 1200 are banned. Big difference right?

This means it’s up to you as the consumer to get your eagle eye on and read labels!

This toxin issue alone is one reason we have chosen to share and sell the Arbonne range of skincare (nutrition, cosmetics and bodycare too). We absolutely love their products, and their philosophy is even better (if that’s possible!). Arbonne’s skincare is intelligent, effective, clean, vegan, and always non-You can shop the entire Arbonne line at our site HERE.

If you thought all cosmetic brands were created equal, well, I think you know what I would say. No way! I spent decades slathering on beautifully pigmented foundation, eye shadow, blush, contouring powder, mascara, and lip gloss. What I never thought to do was read the ingredients. Besides, who saves those tiny boxes anyway, with print you couldn’t make out with a magnifying glass?

Your makeup will only look as good as your skin does underneath, so it’s essential that you don’t skip Tip #2.

So what do you look for in a makeup line? First, you’ll need to set some standards around what ingredients you’re willing to accept and which ones you aren’t. Then begins the hunt for the brand whose philosophy matches your new rules. Here’s yet another reason we love Arbonne! Beautiful makeup that is vegan, photo-ready, toxin-free, gluten-free…and every other free you can think of?

Done and done.
