3 Tips for Healthier, Prettier Skin
Do you depend on your skin’s appearance for self-confidence?
Years ago, when I was dancing for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, I got a lot of compliments on my skin. But what most people didn’t realize is that I did a really good job covering up imperfections with makeup (a lot of it). I had eczema that came and went as it pleased, and although it rarely affected my face, I still had to think about the other parts of my body that were often exposed, thanks to sometimes super-skimpy costumes.
You can probably imagine that I began to rely heavily on my appearance for my self-confidence. But guess what? You shouldn’t have to! Whether you love playing in makeup or prefer the fresh-faced look, it’s essential that you develop some rituals around skin care, so that you can have healthy, beautiful skin forevah! Let’s jump into my 3 Tips for Healthier, Prettier Skin!
TIP 1: CLEANER DIET + LIVER SUPPORT
Don’t fool yourself. You knew this part was coming! Yes, yes and yes - your skin’s appearance is dependent upon what you put in your body, as much as what you put on it. A clean, mostly-plant-based diet, coupled with daily care for your liver make up a huge part of your skin’s success.
This doesn’t have to be complicated. Eat less meat. Eat more plants. Plants include whole fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, and some grains. Reduce or eliminate your gluten, sugar and dairy intake, as these foods are inflammatory, acidic in nature and create more work for your precious liver to neutralize and eliminate.
Your liver has more than 500 functions. Talk about the worker bee! In a nutshell, its job is to neutralize toxins and inflammation as well as to eliminate what the body no longer needs. Aside from extremely important tasks like converting your thyroid’s T4 hormone to the active T3, or facilitating the metabolism of estrogen so it doesn’t accumulate in your body, the liver’s health is directly related to the appearance of your skin.
What you can do - Detoxifying the liver is a critical step to promoting optimal health and longevity. If you never intentionally care for your liver, you are destined to encounter chronic conditions at some point in life, simply due to the nature in which the liver functions. If toxins cannot be released, they recirculate through the body (think of a fan circulating air).

TIP 3: IT’S ALL IN THE MAKEUP, BABY
If you thought all cosmetic brands were created equal, well, I think you know what I would say. No way! I spent decades slathering on beautifully pigmented foundation, eye shadow, blush, contouring powder, mascara, and lip gloss. What I never thought to do was read the ingredients. Besides, who saves those tiny boxes anyway, with print you couldn’t make out with a magnifying glass?
Your makeup will only look as good as your skin does underneath, so it’s essential that you don’t skip Tip #2.
